Passive Aggressive Personality Disorder

Do you remember, how many times you have tried to control yourself when conflict is going on? And Do you remember, after you control yourself for so many times in so many events, but all of sudden you burst one day like a volcano? This habit might be expensive for you in later life. It can be passive aggression that may lead to criminal activities in future.



Passive aggression is the indirect approach of showing hostile behavior. It is characterized by procrastination, sullen behavior, stubbornness, controlling as well as incomplete the given task to express anger. This type of behavior is shown in different areas but usually seen in the workplace when the staff shows awkward behavior to perform the task.

CAUSES
The actual cause of Passive Aggression is unknown but biological and environmental cause can be related.When a child doesn't get good home environment, or the child is being victimized, punished, tortured, then when he/she grows up, passive aggression can occur. This disorder is also associated with other psychological problems like conduct disorder, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, alcohol abuse, cocaine withdrawal, schizophrenia, and stress.


SYMPTOMS
A person with passive-aggressive personality disorder shows symptoms as follows:

  • Often blames others,
  • frequently criticizing,
  • Being stubborn,
  • Sullen behavior,
  • Unexpectedly expressing anger,
  • Habit of complaining,
  • Procrastination,
  • Making reason to avoid task,
  • Inefficient at work,
  • Avoiding other's suggestion,
  • Unhelpful behavior.

DIAGNOSIS
A medical examination is conducted to view if there is any problem health wise. Then, the person is referred to psychologist or psychiatrist according to necessity. As aggression is a personal experience, a psychologist has to depend on the symptoms of the client to assure he/she has Passive Aggressive Personality Disorder or not.


TREATMENT
With right help treatment is possible. Usually, Counseling is the best solution to treat Passive Aggressive Personality Disorder. Through counseling, it can help reduce underlying problems. A person learns to cope with the problem, express disagreement. On another hand, Assertiveness training helps to manage passive aggression due to which person can remain calm, manage behavior and think clearly before they act. The good home environment can really help in reducing passive aggression.
