It is normal to worry about future but some people are worried excessively though the reason is not too big. It is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about a number of different things.
The people with GAD are unable to control anxiety. They think that something wrong is going to happen and keep worrying for a long time.
Due to this worrying behavior, there can be the problem in work, home, and school or colleges.When anxiety level is mild, they can perform well socially but when it is severe it creates problem to function in daily life. So, it is also called Chronic Anxiety Neurosis.
Diagnosis
If the symptoms of GAD are present, a physical examination is taken and if no physical illness is seen but the problem is still there then, the patient is referred to Mental Health Professionals then proper action is taken. The symptoms should be seen from last six months and it must effect in daily life too.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy helps in changing thinking and behavior.It has been found that CBT helps to get relief from anxiety in long-term.
Medication like alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), Lorazepam(Ativan) helps in reducing muscle tension and stomach cramping. Antidepressants can help in the short term like Buspirone, citalopram, etc. But medication should be prescribed by psychiatrist only.
